Practicing Self-Compassion
There are moments when we are patient with everyone else… and quietly hard on ourselves.
Maybe you said something you regret. Maybe you didn’t follow through. Maybe you simply felt overwhelmed. And then, instead of tending to the moment, you added self-criticism.
Self-compassion is how we stop adding that second layer of hurt.
It’s not making excuses or pretending everything is fine.
It’s meeting yourself with honesty and kindness so you can move forward in peace.
I like to keep it simple:
Notice. Normalize. Nurture.
Notice.
Pause and name what’s happening.
“This is a tender moment.”
Take one slow breath.
Normalize.
Remind yourself you are human.
“Of course this feels hard sometimes.”
Struggle is not a personal flaw.
Nurture.
Offer yourself one kind sentence.
“I can begin again.”
“What is the gentlest next step?”
That’s it.
Self-compassion doesn’t remove responsibility—it steadies you so you can respond wisely.
Tonight, you might ask:
- Where was I hard on myself today?
- What would kindness sound like instead?
Let your inner life feel like a sanctuary, not a place of judgment.
Notice. Normalize. Nurture.
And take one small, caring step.
with care,
Meerabai
