The Courage to Begin Again: Embracing Change with Faith, Compassion and Trust
Life doesn't always unfold the way we expect.
We make plans, set goals, and imagine how things will turn out. Then something happens that changes everything. It might be a health challenge, the loss of a relationship, an unexpected disappointment, or simply the realization that something in our life needs to change.
Suddenly, we're faced with a new reality, and perhaps a question we weren't prepared to answer: Where do I go from here?
Beginning again takes courage, especially when the path ahead is uncertain.
I've come to appreciate that these moments can also become opportunities for deeper self-awareness and spiritual growth. They invite us to look honestly at where we are, recognize what matters most, and consider how we want to move forward.
For me, this is an important part of sacred self-caring.
Giving Ourselves Permission to Begin Again
Have you ever looked back on your life and thought you should be further along by now?
Perhaps there are things you hoped to accomplish, habits you wanted to change, or situations you thought you would have resolved.
It's easy to become discouraged when life doesn't match our expectations.
We may question decisions we've made or spend too much time wishing things had turned out differently.
But the past has already given us what it can: experience and, hopefully, a little more wisdom.
The question now is what we choose to do with what we've learned.
Sometimes beginning again involves a major life decision. Other times it's something much simpler—returning to a healthy routine, making time for meditation, or changing an attitude that has been holding us back.
Whatever the circumstances, we can give ourselves permission to start where we are, with the understanding we have today.
When Life Changes Our Plans
One of life's more difficult lessons is accepting that we cannot control everything that happens to us.
We can do our best, make thoughtful decisions, and still encounter circumstances we never anticipated.
When this happens, we may feel disappointed, frightened, frustrated, or uncertain about the future.
I believe it's important to acknowledge these feelings rather than pretend they don't exist.
Having faith in God doesn't mean we never experience fear or discouragement. Our spiritual practices help us work through these experiences with greater awareness.
Paramhansa Yogananda emphasized the importance of developing inner strength through meditation, positive thinking, and attunement with God's guidance.
These teachings become especially meaningful during times of uncertainty.
Meditation gives us an opportunity to quiet our thoughts and reconnect with the peaceful center of our being. From that place of greater calmness, we can often see our circumstances more clearly.
We may still have difficult decisions to make, but we are better able to approach them with discrimination rather than fear.
Sometimes my prayer is simply:
Dear God, I don't know exactly what comes next. Please help me recognize what is mine to do. Give me the courage to move forward and the patience to trust Your guidance.
There is comfort in remembering that we can ask for divine help while doing our part.
Learning to Let Go
Beginning again often involves releasing something we've been holding on to.
It may be an expectation, an old habit, a familiar way of thinking, or an image of how we believe our life should look.
Sometimes we even need to let go of the pressure to return to who we were before a difficult experience.
I find the changing seasons a beautiful reminder of this process.
In autumn, trees release their leaves as part of their natural cycle. They move into a period of rest before new growth appears.
Our lives have seasons, too.
There are times when we feel energetic and productive, and others when we need more quiet, reflection, or healing.
Learning to recognize and respect these changing needs is an expression of self-awareness and self-love.
We may discover that our priorities have changed or that something we once considered important no longer holds the same meaning.
Rather than resisting every change, we can become curious about what life is teaching us.
What am I being asked to release? What is becoming more important to me?
These questions can help us move forward with greater understanding.
Treating Ourselves with Compassion
One of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves during a new beginning is compassion.
Think about how you would speak to a dear friend who was going through a difficult transition.
Would you tell that person to hurry up, stop feeling uncertain, and get everything back on track immediately?
Most likely, you would offer encouragement, understanding, and patience.
Why should we offer ourselves anything less?
Sacred self-caring includes learning to treat ourselves with the same kindness we so readily extend to others.
As we navigate change, it's important to recognize and honor our needs. We may need more rest, time for reflection, support from others, or a gentler daily routine. What worked for us in one season of life may need to change in another.
Compassion allows us to make these adjustments without unnecessary self-criticism and to appreciate our progress, however small.
Sometimes progress means returning to a healthy habit or taking a meaningful step forward. Other times, it's the quiet inner work of developing patience, accepting what we cannot change, or finding greater peace within ourselves.
Both are valuable expressions of growth.
A Simple Sacred Self-Care Practice
If you're experiencing a time of transition, I invite you to spend a few minutes in quiet reflection.
Find a comfortable place to sit. Close your eyes and take several slow, natural breaths.
Allow your body to relax and your attention to turn inward.
Imagine yourself surrounded by a gentle golden light, representing God's loving presence.
Silently affirm:
I am grateful for the wisdom of my experiences.
I release what no longer serves my highest good.
I welcome this new chapter with faith, courage, and an open heart.
Rest quietly for a few moments, allowing your mind to become calm.
Then ask yourself:
What is the most important thing for me to understand right now?
Listen without trying to force an answer.
When you're ready, open your eyes and write down any insights that came to
you.
Journaling for Inner Growth
Take a little time to reflect on these three questions:
- What area of my life is inviting me to begin again, and how do I feel about it?
- What expectations, fears, or old beliefs am I ready to release?
- What is one meaningful action I can take to support the next chapter of my life?
Let your answers be honest. Journaling is an opportunity to become better acquainted with yourself and the wisdom you're gaining through your experiences.
The Gift of a New Beginning
One of the things I appreciate about the spiritual path is that every day offers another opportunity to grow.
We can change an attitude, renew a commitment, make a healthier choice, or approach a familiar situation with greater understanding.
And sometimes, after a difficult experience, we discover qualities within ourselves that we hadn't fully recognized before—strength, patience, compassion, or a deeper capacity for faith.
We may even find that our understanding of success, happiness, and purpose has changed.
I believe these discoveries are among the gifts of spiritual growth.
So, if you're facing a new beginning, give yourself time to understand what this season of life is asking of you.
Honor your experiences and the wisdom they've brought.
Stay open to God's guidance, and have faith in your ability to meet what lies ahead.
As Paramhansa Yogananda taught:
"The true basis of religion is not belief, but intuitive experience. Intuition is the soul's power of knowing God."
— Paramhansa Yogananda, The Essence of Self-Realization
May your meditation deepen your intuition, your faith strengthen your courage, and each new beginning bring you closer to the peace and joy of your soul.
With love and blessings,
Meerabai
